978 is a compressed packing composed of high temperature aramid fibres
and nitrile rubber. It can withstand service temperatures up to 600F
This sheet is notable for its high resistance to petroleum based liquid
fuels, lubricants and other petroleum based fluids.
The elastomer also has other excellent physical properties including
good resistance to creep, tearing and abrasion.
Because this combination of qualities fits such a wide variety of
gasket applications, this nitrile based compression sheet is second only
to SBR rubber rubber based sheet packings in its breadth of use. It is
black in colour.
AS 978 uses nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), commonly called nitrile,
oil resistance is its foremost quality. However it is also useful
against such media as boiling water, ethylene glycol coolants, silicone
fluids, aromatics and virtually all solvents except MEK and high
aromatics
Nitrile based sheet packings are not recommended for ozone exposure,
exposed outdoor applications, phosphate esters, ketones, brake fluids,
strong acids or nitrocarbons.
